Wimbledon: The Big "W" means a win for a Williams
By Kyle Revall
With the majority of the women’s line-up back at full strength, the Ladies' Champion at Wimbledon this year is really anyone’s pick. Of course, I do believe that some women have an edge over others.
You probably guessed it, but I’m going to stick with the Williams sisters. It is difficult to decide who to pick. Two-time defending champion Venus is hard to oppose, having won five singles titles and three doubles titles at the All England Club.
However, the last time Venus tried to take her third straight Wimbledon, little sister Serena had other thoughts in mind. She won her own two singles trophies here, plus the three doubles crowns with Venus. She's proven she can handle both the grass and Venus.
Not only is she finally healthy, but all of her recent tournament losses have been extremely close matches. Her quarterfinals loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros went three close sets, ending 5-7 in the third. And her doubles loss to Bethanie Mattek and Nadia Petrova was a long one as well, ending 6-8 in a third-set breaker.
The Wimbledon draw has been kind to second-seeded Serena. She likely won’t have any trouble until the fourth round where she could run into Victoria Azarenka. All of her serious threats will be late in the tournament, hopefully after she's gained a full head of steam.
Prediction: Serena is going to win Wimbledon 2009.
The grass courts and a powerful game are a dangerous combination for anyone who takes on Serena, who has a habit of focusing in and locking down during Grand Slam tournaments.
